Part 1: Audiovisual Installation Mock-up

Below is a mock-up of what the installation could look like. Although this is an ideal space, with a long pathway for “distance markers” and a room at the end for the black hole projection and performance, almost any space can be made to work. Note that the idea of this installation is to immerse participants so that they feel as if they are literally walking toward a black hole, while listening to the time dilation warp the soundscape around them.

Part 2: Musical Performance/Physics Lecture

Below are two examples of the kind of hybrid lecture/musical performance that will be composed for this residency. Both are recordings from “…you, are a Photon,” a chamber piece I composed in early 2023. This piece also has a narrator who places the audience into the perspective of a handful of photons throughout the universe. The audience then experience the universe through the photons perspective, observing the birth and eventual death of the universe and, at one point, being grabbed by a black hole. The first example is a video of a live performance by The Haven Trio at The University of Hartford, and the second is a studio recording of the same piece. While these are shorter and less involved than The String Quartet and the Black Hole: A Love Story will be, these are still adequate examples of the style of narration/physics lecture/audience engagement that we can expect from this project.
